*Please note, the GIA has not yet assigned a clarity
type to Paraiba Tourmaline, due to the fact that Rubilite
tourmaline, Pink Tourmaline and Watermelon Tourmaline
have been classified as type 3 stones we feel that it is
prudent to include Paraiba tourmaline as a type 3 stone
as well because it is usually found with at least some
eye visible inclusions.
As you may know there have been new finds of Paraiba
tourmaline in the past couple of years which has made
the stone MUCH more affordable to the average buyer.
Up until a couple of years ago the only place in the world
that was known to have Paraiba tourmaline was a tiny
hill in Brazil known as "Paraiba Hill", with more recent
finds in Mozambique and Nigeria of Paraiba tourmaline
there are more stones to be found. Still it is not at all
a common stone and is rarer than diamond and even
rarer than ruby (ruby is 300 times rarer than diamond)
And although the prices have fallen, Paraiba tourmaline
is still the most expensive in the tourmaline family.
Ok, I am sure that a lot of you are sitting there saying
'hey, thanks for the history lesson, but what the heck
is so special about paraiba tourmaline?'
The reason that Paraiba tourmaline is so special is because
it is copper bearing (also often containing manganese).
What is so special about the copper found in the tourmaline?
It makes it brighter than any other tourmaline you will see
in your life. Paraiba is found in greens, blues, pinks and
purples, and ALWAYS contains copper.
Please be sure to ask when buying Paraiba tourmaline
from ANYWHERE if it has been tested for copper content,
there are many people selling Paraiba tourmaline on eBay
and elsewhere who are selling stones that LOOK like Paraiba
as Paraiba.
I will answer the question right now, every stone that I sell
as Paraiba tourmaline has been checked and is copper
bearing.
